Love & Anarchy presents three of the winners from the festival’s National Competition 2024: How to Please (dir. Elina Talvensaari, Main Prize), I Smell a Mouse (dir. Iiti Yli-Harja, Special Mention) and Fabulous Cow Ladies (dir. Mia Halme, Audience Award). The documentaries take viewers in the Kafkaesque labyrinths of Finnish asylum system, to a new home full of nightmarish animation mice and through the four seasons with fabulous cow ladies.

In How to Please Iraqi Wed Al-Asadi tells the story of how he got stuck in the Finnish asylum system. He tries his best to get through the bureaucratic maze but realises getting out becomes even more difficult than getting in.

On muuttopäivä, ja Iiti tuskailee oliko ero lapsen isästä oikea päätös. Sohvalla, muuttolaatikoiden keskellä, makoilee jo uusi poikaystävä. Mitä on tullut tehtyä? Kuin universumin merkkinä huonoista elämänvalinnoista, uuden asunnon synkissä nurkissa näyttää pyörivän hiiriä. Ne kuitenkin ohjaavat Iitin uskomattoman sattuman äärelle.

A documentary puppet animation about Iiti’s moving in day. Like a sign from the universe for her poor life choices, there seems to be a nightmarish mouse lurking in the shadows of her new home. Iiti has to get rid of the mouse by whatever means necessary. She arms herself with mouse traps, lethal spray and even an ultrasonic repellent. But the nasty mouse problem just escalates and ultimately leads Iiti to a strange coincidence. Could Iiti be a mouse herself?

Fabulous Cow Ladies

Kolme lehmää – Ilo, Muru ja Namu – elää metsässä. Isoäiti Ilo ja sen lapsi Muru pelastettiin metsälaitumelle teurasauton ovelta. Namu on Murun lapsi, joka syntyi yllätyksenä laitumelle. Kolme naista, eläinlääketieteen tohtoria, hoitaa lehmiä, ja lehmätkin hoitavat naisia. ”Fabulous Cow Ladies” on luontokylpy, elokuva elämän kiertokulusta ja yhteisön tärkeydestä. Kolmen naisen ja heidän lehmiensä matriarkaalista jengiä kutsutaan nimellä FCL – Fabulous Cow Ladies.

Three cows – Joy, Crumb and Sweetie – live in the forest. Joy is grandma and Crumb is its child. They were both rescued to the forest pasture from the door of the slaughterhouse truck. Sweetie is Joy’s granddaughter, who was born as a surprise on the pasture. Three women take care of the cows, and the cows of the women as well. ‘Fabulous Cow Ladies’ is an immersion in nature, a film about the cycle of life and importance of community. The matriarchal gang of the three women, doctors of Veterinary Medicine, and their cows is called FCL – Fabulous Cow Ladies.
