Short Film Day 2026 will not be held in the usual way

Cuts to culture funding are impacting the organization of Short Film Day 2026. Unfortunately, beloved Short Film Day that has been held 13 before cannot be organized as in previous years due to a lack of resources. The event has previously been supported by the Finnish Film Foundation.

International Short Film Day, which originated in France, is celebrated on December 21. The idea is that anyone can organize their own free short film screening using their own equipment anywhere; in schools, daycares, libraries, or even their own living room. However, due to budget cuts, the event cannot be held in this format this year.

Tampere Film Festival is participating in Short Film Day by hosting a short film screening at Cinema Niagara on the shortest day of the year, December 21. Further details regarding the screening’s content and schedule will be announced later on the Tampere Film Festival website and social media channels.

In conjunction with Short Film Day, Yle is presenting a special lineup on December 20th, available on both the Teema channel and the Areena streaming service. The content will be available on Areena starting in the morning, while the broadcast on Teema begins at 13:40. The selection includes documentaries, an animated film, drama, and experimental storytelling.

The Tampere Film Festival hopes that as many others as possible will also offer the audience the opportunity to watch short films on the shortest day of the year.

OPEN SCREEN

”The screen is yours!”

Finnish Short Film Day presents its Open Screen film category for the third time this autumn. Open Screen allows participants to send in their own short films for a chance to be included in an official film package for this year’s event!

The selected films will have a great opportunity to be screened all around Finland in different pop-ups; in private gatherings as well as in public events arranged in schools, libraries etc.

The main idea behind the Open Screen category is to open the opportunity for anyone; amateur film makers, beginners and veterans alike to have a chance to be a part of an official pop-up film package, to give more opportunities to different film makers and to enjoy the movie-magic together!

Submissions have been closed.
